Are you looking to use your communications and organising skills, creativity and ability to ‘get [sh]it done’ to make real, positive change in Aotearoa New Zealand?

Are you hungry to work with a small, fast-moving, outcome-focused team to help harness the power of the crowd for good?

Are you looking for the opportunity to turn your best ideas for people-powered change into reality, and to help other New Zealanders do the same?

Unleash your superpowers with ActionStation! Illustration credit: Megan Salole

ActionStation is an independent, member-led not-for-profit organisation representing over 170,000 Kiwis holding power to account, standing for human rights, an open democracy, economic fairness and a healthy environment. We’re a fast-growing and nimble organisation and now we’re looking for a new part time Campaigner with great communication skills, a creative mind, and a passion for getting it done. Most of our organising is online but you will also help us organise offline campaign actions, from petition deliveries to rallies and public meetings.

You’ll be primarily focused on an exciting campaign on the role digital technologies play in our democracy. The increasingly ubiquitous role of of social media platforms in our society presents great opportunities to increase democratic participation while also creating new risks of manipulation by nefarious actors. This ‘digital deceit’ allowed by these platforms has played out in recent US and UK elections and we now have an opportunity to explore the extent to which it affects New Zealand and make sure we create robust protections to maintain an open and transparent democracy.

Last year we enhanced our democracy by unfreezing RNZ funding. This year we’re tackling the new challenges.

You’ll probably have 1–2 years relevant experience, but this doesn’t necessarily need to be in a NGO or digital campaigning. You do need to be tech savvy or able to convince us that you’ve got the ability to pick tech skills up quickly.

Location: Ideally in Wellington but flexible for the right candidate who is happy to work remotely. We currently have small offices in Auckland and Wellington so if you like working from an office with others, you’d need to live there.

Hours: 20–30 hours per week depending on availability.

Salary: Between $45–55k pro rata, depending on experience.

Fixed term: Due to current funding constraints this position will be a one year fixed term contract. There is the potential for this role to become permanent and/or increase in hours depending on fundraising success.

If you’re like us, you think that the hope for our future lies with the ability of people, lots and lots of people, to come together in new ways, challenge the power of the old systems, and build a more democratic, fair and just society.

At ActionStation we’re a driving force in this transformation. Since we launched before the 2014 election, we’ve been launching high-impact, rapid-response campaigns to help hundreds of thousands of people across New Zealand come together to drive progressive political change.

So, if you can write powerful messages that connect with a broad range of busy people from across the political spectrum, if you have a quick strategic mind that can spot opportunities and come up with practical and creative solutions, and if you have a passion for winning with a data-driven and outcome-oriented team — then this position could be amazing for you.

We welcome and value the contributions that individuals who identify as members of marginalised communities bring to our organisation, and encourage Māori, people of colour, women, people identifying as LGBTQI, members of ethnic minorities, immigrants and people with disabilities to apply. We recognise that this list is neither exhaustive nor representative of the intersectionality present within each individual. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would like to be considered for employment equity.

Reporting to the Campaign Manager, the position will start as soon as possible.

To apply: Please send a CV and cover letter to info@actionstation.org.nz with the subject line “Application: Campaigner”. Please send as PDF documents with your first and last names in the file name. Applications close on Monday 2nd April at 8pm.
